Bewtiched?

Was the TV programme Bewitched influenced by this movie?

reply

I was just watching this last night and I wondered the same thing. But I read that I Married a witch was the influence for the Bewitched series.

I Married a Witch + Bell, Book and Candle = Bewitched

Is that a fair equation??

"I promise you, before I die I'll surely come to your doorstep"

reply

I watched I MARRIED A WITCH recently and was surprised how good it was. The effects were and still are very good!

reply

yes, that is a proper equation. both are good movies.

I always wondered about it too. Some groups say this movie inspired "Bewitched", others say I Married A Witch. Maybe it IS a combo of both, but I lean more towards BBAC.

Interesting. People also ask if the TV series, Hogan's Heroes was inspired by the 1953 movie, Stalag 17.

reply

After seeing Stalag 17, I wondered about that too.

Hogan's Heros did come out of Stalag 17. My mom told me there was an huge uproar when HH came out, as people strenuously objected to the idea of a concentration camp as the basis for a comedy.

reply

"HH" is not set in a concentration camp, it's a POW camp. Robert Clary, who played LeBeau on the show, was an actual concentration camp survivor. Someone asked him about doing the show with his history and he said the same thing about the difference. Thus, he didn't feel uncomfortable about doing it.

Yeah, it's weird how many people seem to miss the difference and I've heard its hurt the show over the years which is a shame.

Per Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogan%27s_Heroes#Controversies
...the authors of Stalag 17 sued Bing Crosby Productions, who produced Hogan's Heroes but lost because the judge felt there was a difference in tone.

Interestingly, both films have a comical Sgt. Schultz, played by Sig Rhuman in the film and John Banner in the TV show. Both appear as German soldiers in the film 36 Hours, (1964).

Regarding Bewitched, I loved that show but it would have been interesting if Samantha were more like the feline Gillian Holroyd (Kim Novak).

Sgt. Schultz, nobody had ever escaped Stalag 17, the tunnel. Certainly not the same premise, but enough for a light bulb to go off in somebody's head.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

But, she has no powers after she falls in love! He marries a "humdrum" human, not a witch. The only thing that seems borrowed from "BBAC" is witchy relatives, especially the aunts. Her rival might be a bit like Endora though.

In "I Married a Witch", she STILL has powers, AND they have a witch daughter who is a miniature of her mother, just as with Samantha and Tabitha. By the way, they do have a witchy relative, too: her warlock father.

I've seen both films many times, and I vote that the borrowing is mainly from "IMAW".

EDIT: I would never compare Uncle Arthur to either of those male characters in "BBAC". Maybe it was a springboard for coming up with goofy relatives.

reply

I don't know about the whole show, but the character of Uncle Arthur had to be based on Jack Lemmon's character in BBAC.

A heart can be broken, but it still keeps a-beatin' just the same.

reply

I was thinking Uncle Arthur was more like Ernie Kovacs' character. Lemmon's character, though something of a beatnik, was more subdued.

Both this and I Married A Witch.
