Rex Harrison, Susan Hayward?

Chicago Tribune, Tuesday, December 18, 1956:

LOOKING AT HOLLYWOOD

by Hedda Hopper

" . . . . Rex Harrison hasn't yet signed his deal to make "Bell, Book and Candle." He wants approval of director, producer, and star. However, his salary of $200,000 has been agreed upon. Susan Hayward is wanted for this picture too, but her asking price is $50,000 more than Harrison's . . . "

I'm a big fan of both Susan Hayward and Rex Harrison but I think the casting of James Stewart and Kim Novak for this film was perfect.

I agree with the above post.

While a big Susan Hayward fan, Kim Novak was perfect in this movie

Susan Hayward and Rex Harrison would indeed co star years later in Joe Mankeiewicz
The Honey Pot

Yeah, they also came close to signing Laurence Olivier and Vivian Leigh. Thank goodness they finally picked Stewart and Novak.

Rex Harrison and Lilli Palmer had the roles on Broadway!

I can see Rex Harrison playing Stewart's part. But I think casting Susan Hayward would have turned it into a comedy where old man and young woman fall for eachother. It would have been way too cliche.
