Does anyone know what this sound effect is called?

When Nicky is walking down the street, he uses his magic to make the traffic lights turn green. There is a sound effect that accompanies this scene and I've heard it in various cartoons, movies, and TV shows that deal with magic. I was wondering if anyone knew if this particular sound effect has a specific name.

I was wondering the same thing. In fact, that's why I came to the board.

I also wish I could remember what else I know it from. But oh well.

I'll check wiki later, another movie i want to watch is coming on TCM now.

I've heard it on "Bewitched" and on the cartoon "Shazzan" (not to be confused with "Shazam").

I've heard it in cartoons too, but never Bewitched. I would ask the previous poster to identify which episode(s) of Bewitched.

I'll have to watch them again. To my knowledge, I think they only used it once.

Maybe it's a "thrum" and of course you can always get a herbal remedy...

reply

Yeah, starting there it was soon used by the film's studio Columbia's UPA studios, then Hanna-Barbera by 1966.

I just caught the end of the movie but I have seen it a few times.

Two sound effects that come to mind are the Flexitone and a water gong.

The flexitone has a thin flat metal plate that is flexible. There are two beaters or rubber balls attached to springs that when you shake it back and forth like a baby's rattle bang against the metal plate. You rest your thumb on the plate and can bend it slightly to bend the tone.

The other is a water gong. A metal plate or gong is suspended from a frame above a trough filled with water. You bang the gong and with a foot pedal and pulley system can raise and lower the gong into the water, thus bending the tone a bit as it rings.

Without seeing the movie again, these are my best guesses as I heard them near the end of the movie when all the streetlights were going out.

Don't know the name of the effect, and it didn't sound familiar, but the sound effect they used when Jack Lemmon character unlocks the door is in Star Trek TOS.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

I think they used this sound effect on Super Friends when the Wondertwins activated their powers.

They sure did, Claude, use it on Wondertwins......it almost sounds PG when the guitar is heard..I wonder which Sound FX site has it LOL.

It was also used often in the Filmation "Fantastic Voyage" cartoon series.
