Kim Novaks eyebrows!
So huge! She is so pretty but those eyebrows steal the attention from that lovely face. Yikes, what were they thinking during makeup? Watch how they totally change from scene to scene. It is amazing!

shareYes, they are! Eyebrows were the facial focus (and to some extent, lips) of makeup back in the 1950's; the eyes would be in the 1960's. Also see Audrey Hepburn's, Elizabeth Taylor's and of course Joan Crawford's during this period.
I have some color pictures from the 1950's of my mother and aunts and all you saw were heavily penciled eyebrows and red lips, virtually no other makeup.
"I told you a million times not to talk to me when I'm doing my lashes"!
Eyebrows or not she looked mighty fine.
It's that man again!!
That's the way it was back then. Ever seen Joan Crawford's movies? Or Kim Novak in Vertigo?
shareI didn't have a problem with her eyebrows at all. Yes, they are very theatrical, but some women can pull it off. For example, I cannot see Doris Day carrying off such a dramatic look very well.
Also, today's Instagram pics are also famous for the crazy thick eyebrows, so evidently they are back.
While many features vary from person to person, genre to genre, and from theatre to film, etc., I still believe that certain individuals can carry it off and it can add to their persona.
Never been a fan of Joan Crawford's, for example, and never liked her thick overly penciled eyebrows. But that was her signature statement back then, and she's remembered for it.
Kim Novak however pulls off a feline, feminine and sexy look without the eyebrows looking harsh or heavy.

There are some close-ups where you can see her own (plucked) eye-brows under the pencil. I am rather obsessed with eyebrows since I am a portrait artist, and eyebrows give so much of the individuality to a face. But they certainly overdid it at that period. Novak is quite lovely in this movie, but I thought she looked coarse in Vertigo.
