Something that always seemed hokey

In several episodes Mike was supposedly fighting against terribly strong underwater currents. The stuntman would twist and writhe around, but he was the only thing being "affected" by these currents. Everything else would remain relatively still: weeds, sediment, fish--even his air bubbles would rise lazily in a straight line.

I always wondered why they couldn't have used a machine off-camera to create a disturbance so that it would look a bit more realistic.

I'd guess sediments. They wanted the water clear for light transmission and to see what's going on. Moving the water would likely stir up sediments.

Then I guess they tried it and didn't like the results or decided it was too expensive to do.

Maybe budget was an issue. But it just seemed like they could shoot some water a few feet off the bottom so it would at least bend the weeds and scatter some fish without disturbing the sediment.
