Chuck Connors as Earl Bantry in "Deadly Image"

The first time we get a glimpse of Chuck Connors as Earl Bantry is a vivid memory for me from when I caught the series the first time around as a kid.

I even recall calling out to my mother to point out this oddity to her.

The only other scene that strikes me quite the same way is the one in which Johnny Crawford is loafing against a tree while the young lady he is with is gathering indian heads in the "Old Tony" episode.

I also remember being struck by how odd it was for there to be a regular female character; Lou Mallory.

Prior to her, it was all father and son dynamic in an all-male universe.

Playing Earl Bantry came easy for Chuck. In 1958's The Big Country before Lucas McCain he played a coarse derelict named Buck Hennesy.

I wasn't aware of that.

I know that I never really felt comfortable with Chuck Connors as Janos Skorzeny in the "Werewolf" series.

I didn't want him to be a villain after he was the Rifleman hero of my kid years.

Buck Hannassey in "The Big Country" was a craven villain, but he wasn't a derelict.

"while the young lady he is with is gathering indian heads"

Damn!
