Family Show

I know the "The Rifleman" was a family-oriented tv show. However, one important aspect of 19th century life was obviously ignored. That omission would be prostitution. Women who had no money and no family, this was the only means for survival. Not every female could teach or run a store. There were some episodes of female characters who were not well liked or shady, but that was as far as the plot took it. Miss Hattie, Milly and Lou were the core female cast members during the show's run and they were all great role models. Not all of history's past needs to be told.

Rifleman had its share of loose women like Beth Garrett in The Actress, Aggie in Wyoming Story, Nora and Lil Halstead in Eddie's Daughter.

You are right North Fork didn't have women in the saloon except in Deadly Image and Boarding House.

While I agree it does have a family themed storyline, not really too oriented for family viewing however, given all the bodies mowed down regularly under a hail of bullets.

It aired in 59 through 63. I'm sure they had certain standards that they had to adhere to. It probably wasn't okay to publicly talk about it on tv especially since I think the audience intended did include families.
