The Rifleman smoked

I saw what I believe is the first episode. Lucas was smoking a cigarette, which I'd never seen before. I saw another episode where Lucas was smoking a cigar.

My question is, is there a reason why they never showed him smoking in later seasons?

That's a good question! Maybe it depended on if the actor smoked or not. It was common in TV shows of that era. For instance Josh Randall smoked frequently on 'Wanted Dead or Alive'.

Connors had started smoking in 1940. For many years he smoked three packs of Camel cigarettes a day until he quit the habit in the mid-1970s, though he occasionally resumed smoking afterwards. He died on November 10, 1992 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles at the age of 71 of pneumonia stemming from lung cancer. At the time of his death, his companion was Rose Mary Grumley.

Thanks, I found that information later.

In that era before surgeon general's 1963 report adults smoking on a TV show was acceptable but I only recall Lucas enjoying an occasional cigar, never any cigarette! Besides in 19th century west the men tended to roll their own cigarettes rather then buying pre-rolled cigarettes. 😂

In the late '50s and '60s most adults smoked. I can hardly remember any adult non-smokers from when I was a kid back then. Yet for some strange reason that I am quite thankful for I never picked up the habit.
