Dan Troop and Johnny McKay
Be honest. Wouldn't you love there to be an episode in which Dan Troop says to Johnny McKay: "It's such a hot day, Johnny. Let's mosey over to the swimming hole and go skinny dipping."

"Johnny, have you ever been in a... in a Turkish prison?"
"I thought I told you to come alone."
There was certainly a lot of homoerotic subtext in the series.
They really should have given the deputy a woman companion...but I guess nobody noticed at the time.

Hot Summer Afternoon in Laramie Sheriff's Office
Marshall Troop: Johnny, you look awfully hot and sweaty. It's been a long day, and the town's pretty quiet. I know you've been working hard all day digging out that latrine out back like I told you to. I've got an idea..... Let's take the afternoon off, and you can put on those nice new swim-trunks I gave you for your birthday last month, and we'll head down to the lake for a swim ?
Johnny (eagerly): You mean it, sir ? That sounds great ! My back's killing me. I'd sure love to take the afternoon off and go for a swim.
Marshall Troop (smiling): Sure, Johnny. I'll lock up, while you go get changed. Then I'll head on over to the Birdcage and pick us up some cold beers, and I'll bring some liniment, too...... A nice backrub, and you'll feel just like new. I'll meet you down at the lake in half an hour.
Johnny (happily): Sounds great, sir. See you in half an hour.
I think the budding Troop/McKay relationship changed after Miss Lily hit town, so one of the sponsors or show runners could have seen the boys' original intimacy might, in hindsight, need to be straightened out(puns intended).

It wouldn't surprise me. Batman was given a love interest in the 50s in an attempt to do away with rumors that he and Robin were gay. I seem to recall at least one other case of something similar happening, but I can't quite place it. I know that, when the series Cagney and Lacey came around, one of them was married so as to avoid rumors of lesbianism. Of course, that was sometime after 1958.
