Just watched the subject episode, and found the dead-on look alike for Lee Van Cleef. The character of Jack Saunders is listed by IMDb as Mort Mills, but if that wasn't really Lee Van Cleef I think I better start heading for Senile City to wait for the dirt nap. Has anyone else noticed this episode and my "phantom" appearance of Lee Van Cleef? Besides, I never heard of Mort Mills even though he has a long list of credits in IMDb.
Maybe you better start heading for senile city. Mort Mills only has a passing resemblance to Lee Van Cleef, and I have seen him over the years in many old episodes of different series. I fail to see the "dead-on look alike", but hey, that's just me. Sorry, but that's the good, bad and ugly of it.
I tell you I see an episode with Lee Van Cleef but IMDb says it was Mort Mills. What do you do? Do you try to help? Do you do anything useful? Not a chance. You say you fail to see the "dead-on look alike," but you also fail to mention if you actually saw this particular episode recently. You tell me it's time to head off to senile city. You think I don't know Lee Van Cleef when I see him? Anyone would know him. He's the skinny rat faced guy who always looked like he was suffering from consumption and was not far away from his own dirt nap.
Well, tough guy. I figured it out. There were actually three "Owny O'Reilly" shows which featured Joel Grey in the title role: "The Salvation of Owny O'Reilly" (24 Apr. 1960); "The Return of Owny O'Reilly" (16 Oct. 1960); and "Owny O'Reilly, Esquire" (15 Oct. 1961). As it turns out, I was actually watching the second of the three episodes while I was looking at the IMDb listing for the third show. The IMDb listing showed a character named "Jack Saunders" played by Mort Mills. The episode I was actually watching had a character named "Jack Sanders" which can easily be mistaken for "Jack Saunders." When I finally figured out there were three "Owny O'Reilly" episodes, I checked IMDb for the second episode, and sure enough, it was, indeed, the consumption ridden Lee Van Cleef who was playing "Jack Sanders."
Having figured this thing out about multiple episodes, it is now apparent the title to my thread should indicate "The Return of Owny O'Reilly" instead of "Owny O'Reilly, Esquire." Changing the title of the thread at this point would cause more confusion, so this post will have to serve as the explanation for the error in the thread title.
I know folks like Clint here will have trouble understanding, so, now listen punk. Are you feeling lucky today? Go ahead, make my day.
I am going to attempt to make your day. It is all so clear now, after reading your particularly verbose retort. If you had told me originally that you were watching Lee Van Cleef, and that he was a "dead-on look alike" for Lee Van Cleef, I would have agreed whole-heartedly.
But the confusion is entirely understandable. My 90-year-old senile mother often makes similar mistakes, too.
Best wishes and sympathies, Clintessence
P.S. A rat-face, consumption ridden skinny guy? Are you kidding? Ol' Angel Eyes was a "bad" dude. Are you sure you weren't accidently watching John Caradine?
You are one nasty old man. You talking about my age! That is like the pot calling the kettle black. If we ever do get to take a trip together out to Combat!'s canyons, you better be a whole lot nicer to me, or you might not make it out of one of those canyons.
Yes, Van Cleef does look like a rat faced, consumption ridden, skinny guy. And, yes, I even thought of throwing in the fact that he reminded me of John Carradine (two "r"s) and his sickly looks. Boy, if I ever got you out in Franklin Canyon, you might have to crawl back out.
Going out to those canyons really is a nice thought, isn't it. I have to give you a call soon, and I want to ask you about the Gunsmoke episode called "The F. U." It was the 27th episode from 4th season (14 March 1959). Check out this Gunsmoke discussion link:
Well, I have to say that you galavant all about the country like a retired old man. (Makes me envious). If we get to "Combat's!" canyon, I won't need to worry about your vast array of weapons, because I am aware of California's wussy gun laws. (However, after hiking around those canyons, I might barely be able to crawl out anyhow).
I checked out the "Gunsmoke" episode thread, and it reminds me of the 1968 movie, "The Odd Couple", when Walter Matthau is railing against Jack Lemmon about the things he does that irritate him. He said, "I hate those little notes on my pillow that read, 'All out of Corn Flakes, F. U.'. It took me three hours to figure out F. U. stood for Felix Unger."
(And don't think I didn't notice that subtle little jab about spelling Carradine with only one 'r').
I just watched an episode of "Rawhide" titled "Incident Of The Enormous Fist", in which Gil Favor accidently kills your buddy, that rat-faced consumption ridden Lee Van Cleef. It was from 1964, so less than a year later Clint and Van Cleef were in Spain filming "For A Few Dollars More." Clint and Rat-face did two episodes of "Rawhide" that year.
Best wishes, Clintessence
Hey David,
Guess what? I just watched the other episode of "Rawhide" that guest starred your rat-faced buddy. It was titled "Piney". It also guest starred Ed Begley, who was also in "Hang 'Em High" with Clint.
Best wishes, Clintessence
Hey Dave,
Guess what? I just watched an episode of "Gunsmoke" from 1964, titled "Take Her, She's Cheap". It guest-starred your other rat-faced buddy, Mort Mills. They don't really look alike, I'm afraid.
david - I think you may be confusing two Owny O'Reilly episodes.
Lee Van Cleef was in The Return of Owny O'Reilly. His character's name was Jack Sanders. In this one, Owny finds a dead man who is a wanted outlaw. Owny then tries to prove to Marshal Troop that Jack Sanders was the dead man's partner and is the one who killed him. I think that at the end of the episode Owny reveals that some stolen money is in Sanders' saddlebags and this shows that Owny was right all along.
I am not as familiar with the Owny O'Reilly, Esquire, episode, but that one probably does feature the great character actor Mort Mills as Jack Saunders.
The names of the characters are quite similar and that may be where the confusion comes from.
I just watched the episode. I love both Mort Mills and Lee Van Cleef, so I've seen them about a zillion times. I spotted Mort Mills right off. No doubt about it. Maybe it was the voice that threw you.
