shareI got a copy of this a few years ago and it's one of my favorite exploitation films. Mamie is great in this one!
shareI saw the MST3K version. I enjoyed the movie itself as much as some riffing.

I really have a hard time believing and knowing that this is a bad movie. how could it be in an episode of MST3K? it's a good movie. I also read that even evil dead 2 was in an episode of MST3K. how can that be?

no, there are films that are above riffing otherwise what would be the point of making fun of great things in movies? and otherwise what would be the point of the point of MST3K making fun of bad movies if every movie can be made fun of?

yeah, but it's not humor that is making fun of something that is bad, if it's not bad. so it wouldn't make sense to make fun of something that is not bad. MST3K was about making fun of bad movies.
what does: Many of the films featured on MST3K were already made available by the networks that ran the show. Other movies, especially ones in the public domain, were just cheaper to acquire legally. have to do with me asking otherwise what would be the point of the point of MST3K making fun of bad movies if every movie can be made fun of?
what about movies that you like? how hard would it be to hear them torn apart by making fun of, belittling remarks. and how would that change and hurt your enjoyment of movies, if you hear belittling remarks about movies? so, then everytime you watch those movies you will remember those remarks and not be able to take those movies seriously and wont' be able to enjoy them.

I didn't understand what you meant. that's why I asked: what does: Many of the films featured on MST3K were already made available by the networks that ran the show. no, because you don't understand the essence of MST3K. MST3K was all about making fun of bad movies. so, if they make fun of good movies that doesn't make sense because what is there to make fun of if something is good?
Danger: Diabolik was a bad movie, that's why it was in an episode of MST3K. and so is revenge of the creature and bloodlust. what did you mean by "better films?" no, they wouldn't of ever gone after riffing on good movies because the whole point of MST3K was to make fun of bad movies.
you should think about what I said because if you think about. if you watch a movie on MST3K you won't be able to enjoy it in a serious way. we remember things, especially things we like.

no, they wouldn't of made fun of good movies because that would go against their essence and point and theme and main idea of the show. no, good and bad is not a matter of opinion. bad is bad and good is good. now there are levels of bad and levels of good. they never picked decent movies.
well you should consider what I said about ruining your memories and your future enjoyment of the films that you love or like. because like you said, some of your favorite episodes have been with movies you find enjoyable in their own right.

but that's not always the case because the worst movie that's ever been in an episode of MST3K is the second best episode of MST3K that I've ever seen: Manos: the hands of fate.

You drunk, OP?
Epic self term.
I loved this film too, especially the MST3K version. So many wonderful scenes featuring Mamie cavorting around in her undies and posing for eye-popping profile shots. I always wondered how those kids had the energy to put on those rock 'n roll extravaganzas after a long hard day of farm work in the hot sun. Nobody but John Russell could have played the heavy nearly as well. His facial expressions in his "love scenes" with Lurene Tuttle are priceless and well worth the admission price.
However, I do have to agree with Michael Walden (The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film) that there's something inherently wrong with a movie in which Eddie Cochran sings one song and Mamie Van Doren sings three.
Life's too short to waste my time on someone who'll just throw it away.
It was okay but making it a vehicle for Mamie VB and adding a lot of rock and roll into it cheapened the movie.
The story itself is very serious. These kids were being railroaded and exploited as cheap labor. This kind of stuff has and, in some places, continues to happen today. That was enough of a plot. The 'shows' they put on in the evenings didn't really fit or make much sense especially because they seemed to be an ongoing thing that started long before that particular group of kids arrived.
As you pointed out, it's hard to even believe they had the energy or even the desire to carry on like that after working so physically hard in the hot sun all day. Whatever was happening, they were putting on a show. You’d think they’d talk about getting out or improving their situation. They even danced and had a show after one of their own, Baby, died so tragically.
The movie seems like it’s two unrelated movies smashed together as one; probably in an attempt to attract a wider audience. As a result, I felt, they did a poor job with both.
By the way, what was up with all the singers singing in the Elvis style? That was annoying. I also had a problem with Mamie’s character singing and dancing so suggestively. She acted like a completely different person; the kind of person who would have easily used her sex appeal to manipulate the men. Instead she acted more demure and naïve ‘off stage’; to the point her sister had to step in all the time. It didn’t make sense.
This is on Turner Classic Movies right now. Never saw the non-MST3K version before.

Heh, I am hip to it now.... just tuned in to it on TCM afterwork...never heard of it. Wow, pretty crazy stuff for a square like me. LOL.
shareSo did I!!
Watching it now TCM. One of those delicious late night moments when you're watching a film so campily hilarious that you wish you could call friends to watch it with you just to validate the lunacy. Other films where I had this experience: "Valley of the Dolls", "Johnny Guitar" and, especially: "Cobra Woman".
My word. I like that these prisoners are called juveniles while not one of the main characters looks under 35. The spontaneous musical numbers fit the movie like a wrong jigsaw puzzle piece. It is a complete WTF joy!
If it is not in the frame, it does not exist!
I don't know that I loved it but I sure enjoyed it. I liked the musical numbers especially Eddie Cochran's Cottonpicker. Mamie's numbers were good especially her last number Calypso. The story was entertaining and I enjoyed watching the "kids" dancing. Much better than I was expecting.
