Time?
Anybody know what year the researchers supposedly send their little lady back to?
shareHard to say. They mix up their history here. Knights in armor existed (900AD to about 1350 AD) centuries before witches became a part of western lore. Further complicating matters, the digger Smolken has an 18th century carriage.

Umm, Knights in armor lasted well into the 1600s at least... certainly, it was a bit old fashioned by then, but witch burning in America was going on by then, and the Inquisition started around 1400.
Well, anyway, no specific date huh? Just thought I'd ask.
Before then that kind of armor was rendered obsolete by the long bow and only used for ceremonial purposes.By the 16th century, armor was utterly obsolete as effective gunpowder weapons were in use.In fact, armor use of this kind had dropped off by the 15th century. ( I looked all this up)
There IS a question of setting also. Is it in America or Europe? There would not ever have been classic Knights in armor in America. Not like the ones in the film. The people in the beginning of the movie clearly have American accents. The past projection setting looks like mid-evil Europe. The real question is not when, but where.
Witches were usually hanged, not burned.Who wants to smell roasted witches for days on end? In America, the Salem witch trials were in 1692.( I checked) The inquisition was in Europe. It began in 1478.(Again I checked)
As far as a specific date goes, this IS a Roger Corman movie we are talking about.
Both our arguments support the fact that there are elements in the movie that existed at different periods in history, making it virtually impossible to determine the time.

Or more likely, that the movie was so cheaply and badly plotted that no thought was given to little things like historical accuracy and consistency. Corman just thought that knights in armor and witches would be cool things to have in his movie. Any 12 year old boy would have agreed.
shareYou have time-traveling psychologists, hookers regressing to virgins, Satan appearing on Earth, etc, and you are worried about the historical accuracy? To be honest, I have always seen this as a filmed fairy tale. It's no more historically relevant than Cinderella.
shareOr the Bible.
Nothing exists more beautifully than nothing.
