Just saw this for the second time--45 years after the first viewing
I wrote about that first viewing--and my subsequent thoughts--nine years ago in a review ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051036/reviews-44 ). My comments were laced with nothing but superlatives, but as I sat down to watch the film on TCM a few hours ago, I was anxious that the reality would not match my impressions, gleaned as they were from so far in my past.
But I was not disappointed. It was every bit the masterpiece I remembered. The black and white cinematography was just as scintillating, the acting as riveting, the dialog as memorable. I really can't say it any better than I did nine years ago. It's too bad that the film remains so relatively unknown.
Fighting for Truth, Justice, and making it the American way.
