Barbara was touching in this film but I wouldn't go so far as to say she had an Oscar nomination coming. In her various roles she almost always played this same part in this same way. Tough and brassy sexpot on the outside, tender and quite vulnerable on the inside, and used cruelly and thoughtlessly by the men she encounters.
The Nichols clip from the Untouchables is at the link. Very racy for the era, I expect Desi Arnaz had her rehearse the scene many times with him closely and attentively supervising. I'm assuming she was re-creating here the actual routine from her earlier stripper days.
Very likeable actress.
