does milner play the guitar?
it appears to me that he is, and playing some pretty intricate jazz improvisations.
any thoughts? looked at his bio, there's no mention of a musical background.

It looked to me that he prepared really well, in the opening shot of him he did a good job of mimicking the line that was being played. But...he just didn't look comfortable holding a guitar. I'm a bit curious to know what make of guitar he's playing, the headstock looks kind of garish.
"By God, I heard the crow call my name!" exclaimed Caw.
that's probably the most likely explanation.
it shows the attention to detail paid, even in the little things, in this fine masterwork film.
i tried to figure that out too. it looks like an epiphone sheraton, or epiphone emporor. might be a guild. i don't think it's a gibson.
shareIt's a D'angelico, one of the hallowed names in the guitar making industry. The particular model was a New Yorker, if I recall correctly, the top of their line. Guitar Player magazine did a piece on this very guitar in the early 90's. Apparently it has been kept under a bed for decades. The writer was a SSOS fan and a jazz enthusiast, and this particular guitar was his holy grail.
shareMilner is miming - the guitar heard on the soundtrack was played by The Chico Hamilton Quintet's regular guitarist at the time, John Pisano.
Here's a look at him. with a link to his discography:

Yes, he did.
But I just checked my soundtrack CD and see I made a mistake. The guitarist on the soundtrack is John Pisano, not Jim Hall who preceded him in the Quintet.

thanks Rollo - another one of life's mysteries solved ;)
shareThanks Rollo! I always wonder about that when I watch this film. Now I know!
Ahhhhhhh...... the beauty of the message boards. I get answers!
John Pisano later toured with the road version of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.
shareHe did a great job at pretending to play guitar. One of my pet peeves is the way people in movies pretend to play instuments, particularly brass and reed instruments. The mouths are always very wrong.

not so in, 'young man with a horn.' I'm a trumpet player, and even though I know it's harry james playing, kirk douglas sure looks spot on.
