Snail or Caterpillar?

In the water they have a shell. Out of the water they look like a caterpillar with little legs. And not very big, fast or fierce looking. Though I'd hate to have one under my bed.

They're prehistoric snails. They WERE pretty big, about 10 to 12 feet high and they looked pretty fierce to me.
