Why remake a good movie? That would only ruin the original "Chess Game" feel of it. The old movies had to build suspense with silences, actual dialogue, and no stupid special computer effects. I am against remakes of any kind. The ones I have seen are lousy efforts to improve upon something already at the top of its class.

As much as I would love to see it, I agree with you. It would be up to the director to go easy on the spectacle of CG effects. I have my doubts. The battle of wits/chess game between commanders is the essence of this film. As long as they could keep or even improve(doubtful)on that, they would succeed. It would end up like the Flight of the Phoenix remake, which sucked.

Amazon423, I generally agree with you that virtually all remakes or sequels are very disappointing. The only instance I can currently think of where a sequel actually equalled or exceeded the original was when "Aliens" followed "Alien." In that case I actually preferred the follow-on, although both were very entertaining. Unfortunately, they got so excited they made two more "Alien" follow-ons, and both were dreadful!

Please no. There are far too many remakes, and almost to a one, they're inferior to the original. This movie may not be perfect, but it's still damned good. LEAVE IT AS IT IS!

If they remade it today, they would probably throw in a woman as a romantic element in an attempt to cater to female as well as male audiences. I think this trend started with the god-awful Pearl Harbour. Yes, I can just about see it before me:

The harrowing story of two captains locked in a deadly game of cat and mouse -- and the woman who loved them both.

reply

Yuck! I am a female and there is no way a female belongs in this movie. It is just a great movie without a female. Basically it is between two men and forces them to use all the knowledge and instincts possible to bring closure to this movie one side or the other.

You couldn't remake it properly, because there is nothing available that is seaworthy and outfitted even remotely like a WW2 destroyer escort. So not only would you have a completely make-believe U-boat (which is the weakest point of the original), but also a completely make-believe surface ship.

Why not instead, remake a movie that was a misfire the first time around and do it right?

Like that movie Bogie made in England where he bursts through a window like Dracula to kill Barbara Stanwyck and she pretends to be frightened.

It would be full of crappy CGI that would look like a video game.

I am a real believer in the some movies should NOT be remade or rebooted because the original version was the best one and should be honored as such.

May I remind everyone what happened when someone in Hollywood had the bright idea of remaking Ben Hur and The Day The Earth Stood Still?

I’d like to see that.

Star Trek remade this movie into an Episode of the Original Series. The Episode is called "Balane of Terror". It's actually how I found out about this old WW2 Movie. The way Star Trek does it it's Kirk and the Enterprise vs the Klingon Ship with a Cloaking device. The Enterprise even uses space depth charges to try making the ship uncloak itself. It's a great episode.
