New DVD, new dialogue dub.

The new DVD is beautiful to look at. If you've only seen this on TV or the previous VHS release, those pan & scan images don't begin to show you how the film should look. Unlike this same company's simultaneous DVD release of Toho's MATANGO: ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE, MYSTERIANS does not use RKO's English language dub we've come to know all these years. Instead, a rather odd new English dub was done. While the dialogue and mouth movements line up better than many other Japanese films dubbed into English, some curious casting choices were made. (For example, having Japanese cyclists speak as if they come from one of America's southern states. At any moment, I almost expected one of them to say "Y'all.")

I actually thought it sounded better in the Spanish dub! I always thought of this movie as a special effects feature and really nothing more. But looking at it in this great print and in a widescreen format, one can really appreciate all the efforts that the f/x people put into making it. And of course, who better to have in the commentary than two special effects directors Koichi Kawakita and Shinji Higuchi.

Now, if they would just give the same treatment to the follow-up film, BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE. (Heck, maybe even ATRAGON while they're at it!)

i have been trying to get to mediablasters website for about four months, and it always says under construction. what is up how long can it take to construct a website.

This is a very funny reaction, because, believe it or not, even though the new 5.1 mix is stupendous in the Japanese language version (the new DVD), for some reason, the English seems to be weaker in the music and effects levels.

Also, I miss the old RKO English track. Especially the scenes with the scientists and the Mysterians...the original translations were much creepier in their delivery for some reason.

Anyone else think so?

Even though it has been years since I saw this film it sticks in my mind. The effects and story line were much better the Japanese science fiction films that were shown here at the time. I got so tired of Godzilla this and Godzilla that. This film had a good plot and better effects than the rest. Glad to see it is available. I personally would not notice the difference in the English dubbing because it has been so long from my last viewing of this film. Hope those of you who have waited for this film are not disappointed.

I have both Japanese and English-language versions of this classic film, on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD. I was disappointed when the Tokyo Shock DVD release came out, after I purchased a copy and took it home to watch it, and discovered that all of the voices of the actors were re-dubbed and it was not the same soundtrack as the original 1958 USA release by RKO-MGM. I saw this movie when it was first released on October 30, 1958 at the United Artists Theater in Inglewood, California. There was a huge cardboard standee poster of the giant robot from the film in front of the theater, One of the voice actors on the American release was Paul Frees, who did most of the English language dub soundtracks of Toho Japan movies, especially the Godzilla series. Paul Frees did the voice of actor Takashi Shimura, who played Dr. Tanjiro Adachi, the scientist who heads the Japanese investigation and defense against the Mysterians. The new voiceover dub version doesn't come close to matching the original, and I don't know why they even bothered redoing it. If anyone has a high quality DVD-R of the original version, with clear picture, color and sound, please let me know, I'd love to have a copy of it.
