I've just watched this movie for the first time, and I have to say the ending disappoints me. Perhaps it is the casting of the lead but Crichton seems far more suited to the lady than to the maid, both because he seems to be of the same 'class' as her in most repects and also because they clearly have genuine chemistry together wheras he and the maid dont in my opinion.
I know it's only a comedy but I think the ending would have been more believable if Crichton had been a polished but working class man who ultimately felt drawn to be with the girl from the ranks who he can relate to, rather than which he comes across as a genuinely posh employee who may be down on his luck but who could easily adapt to marrying a lady. But again this may be down to the casting.

That was the whole point of the film. Crichton was the real Alpha Male of the story, but the English class system prevented him from attaining his true place in society.

It's not only that a rigid class system is the enemy of meritocracy, it's that the pampered classes are themselves weakened by it. It's fitting that Crichton intends to go into business for himself. The true revolution - British capitalism - would do more to raise the general standard of welfare than the French and German revolutions put together.

Were you disappointed because Bill didn't end up with the lady? It can't be a casting issue because this development was integral to the story: Bill did choose Mary over Tweeny on the island but it would've been doomed back in London society (although it's not touched upon whether Daddy would have given his blessing).

The ending is certainly bittersweet, but the realistic one, IMO. Unless Chrichton found out he was of noble blood, there was no way the upper crust of society were going to welcome him with open arms back then. With that said, it's a shame that Lady Mary got the short end of the stick here after her island transformation.
