This definately needs Blu-ray

Filmed in crisp, stark black & white, this film has spectacular snow-covered high mountain location scenery which mix well with the studio scenes. The characters are interesting, the small village looks remote and the atmosphere, sounds and music definitely helps create feeling of being placed in an exotic location. This is truly more an adventure story then a horror one though there are certainly horror elements.

The previously released DVD looks good, but the film would truly benefit from the crisp HD of a blu ray. I wouldn't mind parting with some extra buck to get, say, a nice Criterion release. I also wouldn't mind seeing it on a big screen if the opportunity ever arose.

This is quite an interesting film that really deserves a masterful release.

Anyway, just my opinion.

The last time I watched this on TMC this past winter I was thinking how I might like to see it on the big screen, too. I saw The Thing From Another World a few years back in the theatre, which may be why I thought about this. Maybe I should email my theatre and inquire about it. They show old movies now and then. They have a film historian who does a little Q&A before the movie starts. Saw A Clockwork Orange there a couple years ago, too.

The Japanese blu-ray is pretty good. Not remastered, but a nice, widescreen print.

The Japanese blu-ray does look good but is missing about 5 minutes of footage.
Here is a quick test to determine if are watching the edited version or the full version of the film: About 20 minutes into the film there is a scene with Peter Cushing, Maureen Connell, Forest Tucker and the Lhama together in the Lhama's chamber. Once Maureen and Forest leave the room, the scene should continue on with just Peter and Lhama talking (as found in the complete version). The shorter version of the film fades to black as soon as Maureen and Forest leave the room.

I'd like it to get something. The only DVD I can find is on Amazon for like $60. I watched it on AMC back in the day and it used to creep me the hell out.
