What ethnicity was the defendant supposed to be?

Puerto Rican? Italian?

Is that detail made clear in the source material?

He is seen at the start of the film. He appears to be Spanish or Latino.

Based on the actor he's Sicilian. I think if he were meant to be a different race, it probably would've been brought up as part of the story. Especially given the time period. But they only ever use his socioeconomic status to disparage him.

He’s Hispanic
