It's a small point, but the map shows the old man's apartment that you enter through the front door, then walk down a hall the length of the apartment before entering the living area. That would be a ridiculous waste of space especially in New York where every square foot counts.
shareIt is an odd diagram IMO and a waste of space - I agree. Why not get rid of that hall and make the other rooms bigger. It even looks like there is a window from his living room into his hall - and I guess his is the only apartment on the floor which isn't uncommon. Also what is that space between the bedroom and the living room?

This layout was fairly common in prewar NY apartments.
shareMaybe not uncommon (although I have never seem one like that - and have been in many) but at the very least still a waste of space. (They probably don't exist anymore because of the waste of space). So what is that area between the bedroom and living room? If it was a closet - that would be weird as you would have to go through the closet to get to the living room? Also was he the only one on that floor - one small apartment per floor - or is there usually another apartment on the other side of the stairs? Also why would there be a window in the living room looking into the hall? Many questions - but you seem like you have knowledge of this sort of thing.
