Why Hasn't This Series Been Re-released?

I first watched this Western show as a kid on British TV in the late 50s and early 60s. It seemed certainly as good as if not better than its contemporaries "Maverick" and "Bonanza". These have been re-released on VHS and DVD; why hasn't TOWF? The show was produced by Revue Studio, now part I think of the NBC empire. I'm sure that they're missing a trick in that I can't be the only greyhair that enjoyed the show who would like to enjoy it again.

I also remember watching this in the early sixties.I remember the story -teller/lead actor,Dale Robertson as Jim Hardie with his distinctive drawl.Glad he's still around at 83.(hope I'm not tempting fate here.)Would welcome some repeat showings and fingers crossed it would not be a disappointment.Amazed to see Steve McQueen et al.in the cast lists. They had to start somewhere.

Dear dj009a5496,

I am not sure, but I think that this show was re-broadcast in syndication under the title "Railroad Detective," which name I could not find in this web-site. I agree that the show is eminently enjoyable. Maybe sanity will prevail sufficiently to cause its release in DVD.

Sincerely,

Gordon F. Corbett

"Railroad Detective" was the alternate title of an earlier series called "Stories of the Century" featuring Jim Davis as a railroad detective who managed somehow to capture every villain in the Old West.

I also enjoyed this series which was never too violent and each episode seemed to have a moral message at the end unlike Gun Law (Gunsmoke in the States??) where James Arness shot some villain every episode. I liked Dale Robertson who didn 't seem to appear in much else and I'd love to see the series again.

reply

I seem to recall that Gunsmoke was known as Gun Law in its early days here in the UK, before the title was changed to match the US one.

Universal doesn't give a damn about most of their shows from the 50s. They never bothered to remaster the prints to tape. It would be too expensive for them to do it since their in-house costs are very high.

A 6-disc "Best of" DVD set of the series will be released in the U.S. on July 14, 2009 by Timeless Media. It will contain 46 episodes and one bonus feature, an interview with Dale Robertson. Details and artwork can be found at classicflix.com.

I live in the same town as Dale Robertson. We've both lived in Yukon for decades. While it's not a puny town, it's not what I'd call small. I had an opportunity to meet him once. Didn't know it at the time, and blew it. Still, a funeral isn't the best place to say, "I love your work."

Currently, I've been getting Tales of Wells Fargo from Netflix.

It's now complete on Usenet. If anybody would like a DVD full of Wells Fargo goodness, please feel free to PM me for details. =]

Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit shooting smack...
