Kinda Creepy

Watching the "Treasure" (1962) episode of HGWT today on one of my cable channels - ENWSw. Main guest star is Jeanne Cooper -- who just passed away today. She's playing a pretty strong woman in this show -- a consummate actress.

DeForest Kelly's in that episode. Was Paladin deliberately cruel in that scenario or was he justified in setting her up to be followed around for the rest of her life?

Ofttimes I wonder about that. What do you think?

I was taken aback by the reaction -- seemed rather extreme. If there's loot to be found, why not try to find it? She was married to the guy, after all. As I mentioned, she was also portrayed as being a rather strong individual, so looking for the "main chance" seems reasonable. Perhaps Paladin will soften once the shock of the situation wears off 8-), and tell DeForrest Kelly the truth.

There was no loot. The man made it clear the safe was empty, weren't you paying attention?

Women were severely punished by society for any perceived disloyalty at the time. This was an example of the double standard. Do you find it shocking? Appalling? Did you find it despicable in Paladin who always saw the right and wrong in both sides? After all, Edna didn't have another lover or child, she was faithful to her husband as far as we knew. She supported herself while he was imprisoned.

Everyone watching at the time would take it as her due punishment except for those few who saw the hypocrisy built into their world. It was part of the system that kept women in their second class place.

Edna did try to shoot Paladin when she was supposed to be covering him, whereas her husband did give him cover. So she got her just desserts.

"He IS Redstone."
