I remember Paladin had a longer fight and he used some type of chokehold technique. He used that when they were on the ground. I believe he also used some throwing techniques.
Does anyone know the name of the episode? I would appreciate it.
Was it in a bar for a bet? or was it set in a fight ring? Was he wearing a shirt or shirtless?
There have been several long fights, give me a little help here. I'm sure I can tell you which one it was but I need to know a bit more.
The bar fight was with George Kennedy and it was to win money. It was a boxing fight. Some of it was played for laughs but most of it was serious.
There was another outdoor fight with a young man who with split personalities. Lon Chaney, Jr, was in this episode. It was a good one. The fight took place on stages for the most part, simulating the outdoors. Paladin was shirtless in this one.
No, it was outside. I could clearly see they filmed it outside. I believe he had his shirt on. It's 3 or 4 years ago since i watched it, so i don't remember so much.
There were so many fight scenes...AFA longer ones, that's relative. I'm afraid without more details it's difficult to identify this specific scene without a bit more help.
There are more than 200 episodes of HGWT, and while I know them fairly well, there are too many to distinguish between them...
It might have been the episode "Debutante" where he has a long wrestling match with Wayne Rogers.
It's one of the more light-hearted episodes, with Paladin sent to the hills to find a young woman who has a rich relative in San Francisco. Rogers and I believe L.Q. Jones are her local suitors.
Rogers will never speak up, so Paladin starts taking her away to lure him into a fight to make him admit his love for her.
The episode your are describing was titled "The Debutante" (Season 6, Episode 19). In it, Paladin is asked, by a wealthy woman, to find her long lost granddaughter. Paladin is able to find the granddaughter - she is about to marry - but Paladin discovers that she really loves another man (though she may not know it). The other man loves her also, but he cannot express it to her. Paladin forces the other man's hand - Paladin offers the granddaughter a chance to come away with him to San Francisco. When she accepts, the other man, now insanely jealous, begins to fight Paladin. After feeling Paladin's fist strike his jaw (several times) and knock him to the ground, the man, in a moment of discovery, feels compelled to mention that "we don't fight that way, Mr. Paladin". Upon hearing this, Paladin proceeds to fight in a way more aligned to local custom - some might call it wrestling, or "Rasslin". Either way, Paladin bests the man and, as condition of releasing him, demands the man tell the granddaughter how he really feels about her. The man agrees - Paladin could be very persuasive - and a happy ending is assured.
The granddaughter was played by Gale Garnett (Aunt Lexi in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"). The original groom was played by one of Sam Peckinpah's favorites, LQ Jones. And the other man - Paladin's wrestling opponent - was played by the original Trapper John himself, Wayne Rogers.
And yes, the wrestling sequence was very well done. The stuntman - Hal Needham (yes, Oscar winning Hal Needham) - doubled Mr. Boone in many episodes of HGWT, and even had a lead role in one of them ("Dream Girl" Season 5, Episode 21).
The wrestling scene took place between Wayne Rogers and Hector Mackenby in their roles as the suitors for the hand of Gale Garnett's character in The Debutant. Richard Boone wasn't involved in the fight scene. He stood by and watched.
Hal Needham would have created it. I'm sorry that we didn't identify it before he passed away. He would have told you whatever you wanted to know. He was a great guy and shared all his storied freely.
I'm sorry that I couldn't ID it for you sooner. Gale Garnett was my mother's favorite singer. She wrote and performed the hit song, We'll Sing In the Sunshine and my mother loved it. She played it so many times the record wore out.
If it was The Debutante, Richard Boone was not the one who was fighting on the ground. It was two other actors. No wonder I couldn't figure it out. Kudos to the individual who did so!
L.Q. Jones was Rogers' rival, but the episode climaxed with Paladin first boxing, then wrestling Wayne Rogers. And they indeed rolled around on the ground.
Paladin eventually gets Rogers in a leg scissors and asks, "Do you love her?" Rogers answers "I guess so," and Paladin releases him.
But when ROgers goes up to the girl, he can't bring himself to professing his love. So, he runs at Paladin for another round of westling. Paladin winds up sitting on his back and using Rogers' own arms to create a choke hold and Wayne finally admits his love.
