shareAlong with While the City Sleeps, Warner Archive simultaneously released Lang's other film for RKO in 1956, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. Both remastered, $19.99 at WBshop.com. The prices are likely to be higher at other sites when the films do become available elsewhere.
These were Lang's final US films, but it's unfortunate he had to do them at RKO, a studio on the brink of collapse, which noticeably affected their production values. Nevertheless, both are definitely worth getting.
A word about prices, since it's been brought up. I don't work for wbshop.com, or any other online stores. If you're willing to wait a while you can get better prices at wbshop.com, AND other online stores. I've purchased Warner Archive titles at deepdiscount.com for under $15, and just purchased five titles (including the just-released "Wild Rovers") at the wbshop for $10 each .... with free shipping! Sign up for notifications at wbshop.com, and discount offers wil come to you by email. As for the two titles mentioned previously, I wouldn't rush to purchase either at $19.99, unless you absolutely can't wait. In this case, the early bird doesn't get the worm, it just gets higher prices .... plus shipping charges!
shareI don't work for WB or anyone else, either, but from experience their prices are the best for the Archive series -- usually. You're right that it's best to check on sales on the site, which they have frequently, to get a price better than $19.99 -- you can often find them as low as $14.99, even $9.99. Most sites post a list price of as high as $27 or $28 for Archive titles, then try to soften this by "discounting" them to $23.99 or something, and in any case I've never seen prices as low as when the Archives itself has a sale.
Cost aside, no other site has the films as soon as WB itself: you generally have to wait two to four months before these titles come on line on other sites, and then they're more often than not as costly if not more so than buying direct. I was skeptical at first of doing business directly with WB but they've been very fast and efficient. True, you have to pay shipping, but you have to pay that, or tax, at many sites. But thanks for the heads-up about Deep Discount. It, Critics' Choice and DVD Planet ship from Itasca, IL -- as does Warner! Even their invoices are alike. So they must be tied in somehow.
Point is, know what the situation is everywhere before you buy.
..... needless to say, but you, I, and others are (or should be) always out to get the best deal whenever, and wherever, we can.
I agree that there's some kind of connection with the three dot-coms under the Infinity Resources umbrella. The last five WAC releases I received last week came from Itasca also. The invoice was the same, printed with WB information.
BTW, if you have any questions you'd like to ask about future releases they're very responsive if you contact them through their Facebook page. I got some news on "So Big", "The Blue Veil" and "The Girl Most Likely".
Ah, my friend, as always you're one jump ahead and onto the best news sources. Thank you for the Facebook tip. I have refused to have anything to do with Facebook (old fashioned as I am about privacy and such other quaint preferences), but a case like this is entirely different. Maybe they can also answer why they pulled Ice Palace from their Archive line-up after a few months. I assume it's a rights issue or something but when I emailed them I got only a standard, uninformed reply. But there are many titles that seem ready for the Archives and are still overdue, so a Facebook face-to-face might be interesting. Thanks again!
shareFunny you should mention rights issues with "Ice Palace". If memory serves me right that was based on an Edna Ferber book, just like "So Big", and that's what's holding up its release, and the same for "The Blue Veil", although it's a French author in this case. With "The Girl Most Likely" it's problems with color remastering. Also, since my previous message I asked them about a release of the 70's series/mini-series "The Macahans / How the West Was Won", and got an answer in one day ..... that it was a significant release, and they were considering it.
I feel the same as you about Facebook, and use it very seldom for personal information dissemination, but the fact that WAC is a very active user there, has contest giveaways, new information, and quickly answers questions, has changed my opinion. I keep my account open for this reason. In order to comment on any Facebook account YOU have to open an account there ..... but you can still limit the information you post there.
