lola or rosa

Which woman follows after and takes Mike Ribble's hand in the closing scene of the film? We watch Rosa's face and hear footsteps as someone walks past her, then she lowers her head dejectedly. Yet the woman (who is too small to be identified on a small tv screen) is clearly wearing Rosa's clothes (a long grey dress), nothing like Lola's (a brief trapeze outfit).

I confirm it is Lola (Gina Lollobridgida)

I saw this film when it was first released (I was 5 at the time) and I thought that Rosa followed Mike. However in subsequent viewings, it is Lola (Gina Lollobrigida) who follows him into the street. Chici (the horse trainer) pats Rosa's hand while she is brushing the horse and she keeps on doing so, as Lola passes by the stable stall. Rosa surely would have liked to have completed the relationship that they once had, but the final scene post "Triple" sets up what is the conclusion between Mike and Lola.

Loved this film then and still do to this day. The music is by Malcolm Arnold who later did "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" and "Bridge on the River Kwai" - busy man between 1956 and 1958!

The music reminded me very much of tracts from "Bridge on the River Kwai", which came out the next year, (I have an alblum of the soundtrack). I was going to check the credits but decided to look at the message board first...

Malcolm Arnold use of certain musical 'phraseology' for lack of a better term is seen in all three films that have been mentioned - "Bridge on the River Kwai", "Inn of the Sixth Happiness"and "Trapeze". Stark, dramatic moments in the score, an Arnold trait.

Same holds true for Sir Carol Reed (the director) - angle shots in the circus while performing were eerily similar to those he used in "The Third Man" with Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten.
