Thanks! That article reads as though it could have been written yesterday. It talks about the boy being regarded as homosexual (in both the play and the film), and then goes on to say, "After all, the play was about persecution of a minority, wasn't it?"

Although that was a quote from Deborah Kerr, rather than a statement by the writer, I think it demonstrates that, for many people, homosexuality was regarded 60 years ago much as it is in our present age. In fact, this should serve as a reminder rather than a revelation. Throughout history, a sizable percentage of us, especially those (such as actors and media writers) who have come to know homosexuals as friends or colleagues, have learned to respect and empathize with them. And, with the exception of the occasional Dark Age, have been willing to stick their necks out and speak up on their behalf.
