Why is it taking forever to get this movie onto the DVD format? Sure, it's very dated and almost laughable to watch now, but nevertheless it is an important film and it has moments of great power. Is there a petition list to sign up for to get this movie transfered to DVD?
If you've no patience to wait for an official release, I'm sure you could find someone selling a DVD-R bootleg online. Try your luck with Google.
By the way, I just saw T&S today at my local cinematheque and I must say I did not find it terribly dated at all (actually, considering it brought me right back to my childhood in the '80s and '90s, I'd call it chillingly contemporary). And it's hardly laughable, unless you dislike the kind of mannered aesthetic that characterizes all of Minnelli's melodramas.
But I completely agree with you: there are indeed moments of great power in this, as well as in The Cobweb (another John Kerr-Minnelli melo), and both must be released on DVD!
Thanks for your reply. I liked the movie very much. What I consider "laughable" is the way homosexuality had to be hinted at in order to pass Hollywood's censorship rules during that time. The actual play Tea and sympathy deals with the subject a bit more directly, but not much more. Anyway, this is a noteworthy film and I wold imagine it will be on DVD fairly soon.
