Should we have left America to the Indians Australia to the Abos etc? Fighting over things is the way of the world.
Anyone ever consider a sequel or prequel? I confess myself curious about both Ethan's past and future I suppose he couldn't really fit into society - something like Lee Marvin in Paint Your Wagon.
Wayne should have got the Oscar for this.

Why wouldn't Martin sleep with Look? She wasn't that bad looking and women weren't that easy to come by.

reply

The film was based on a true story.

The ending in reality wasn't so happy and very different from the film. After searching for over twenty years, Ethan eventually found his niece, who had children with the Apache chief. Ethan spending all his money and time on the search, died in poverty a broken man.

20 years? Really? I can buy 15, but 20 seems like she'd be a lot older.

Sequel or prequel for a film this old? Not likely going to happen and who could fill John Wayne's shoes?

However, to be honest, I really wasn't that impressed with this movie. I know this film gets a lot of praise but a sequel wouldn't interest me that much. I can only give this film about a 5.1 out of 10. It's just okay...

As for leaving it to the natives.... A peace agreement should have been made long before it got as bad as it did. That's for sure.... but I won't lose any sleep over it today. It happened, not much can be done about it now.

reply

Exactly. It happened in centuries past. All of the Indians who were wronged and the white people who wronged them died many decades, if not centuries ago. Neither I, nor any living white person is responsible for what happened. There's nothing to be done about it now other than the descendants of 19th century Indians assimilating into modern American society as best they can, if they want to.

(Yes, "Indians". That's how most of them still refer to themselves, instead of using the pompous euphemisms that some white people prefer.)

John Wayne said himself:

I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them, if that's what you're asking. Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.

This may come as a surprise to you, but I wasn't alive when reservations were created - even if I do look that old. I have no idea what the best method of dealing with the Indians in the 1800s would have been. Our forefathers evidently thought they were doing the right thing.

WELL STATED BY THE DUKE.

What he said makes sense. People in the past sometimes made mistakes, but they did what they thought they needed to do in their time. No use agonizing about it now. It's history. Time to move on. Indians are modern-day U.S. citizens today, no longer stone-age noble savages. The rest of us can't all go back to Europe, Africa, and Asia.
