Scar

I have seen this film at least 20 times and regard it as the greatest western ever made ... at times, it reminds me of a ballet the way the characters interact with each other (Ford does exactly the same thing on Three Godfathers, which has wonderful set pieces). On other watchings, I see is as a great silent film the way so much of the story is actually not said ... Wayne's famous look back at the outpost where he meets the rescued white women; Marty bursting into tears when he shoots his first Indian; Ethan throwing off the cover of his rifle as he rides into the devastated ranch of his brother; the way his brother's wife cares for Ethan's belongings. So much depth to the story ...

Anyway, on my 20th look at the film I think I noticed something new. When 'Scar' comes across the little girl in the cemetery he does not have a scar. Later, when Ethan remarks on the scar and why the Indian now carries that name, it twigged. Much is made at the beginning of the movie when Ethan's nephew is gifted his war sabre ... did the boy give 'Scar' his injury in the family attack? Just a thought ... once again, you can read so much into the movie. That's what makes it so great.

It was something I didn't notice until after a viewings too. I reckon Ben did give him the scar.

Yes for Ford the visuals were paramount, same as Hitchcock, having both come from Silent cinema, you can see the importance of telling the story visually, having said that, the language/phraseology in The Searchers is beautiful, lines like "just as sure as the turning of the earth","But what that Comanche believes, ain't got no eyes, he can't enter the spirit-land. Has to wander forever between the winds. You get it, Reverend",great writing there.

From the Trivia section:
Henry Brandon recalled to John Ford biographer Joseph McBride that he waited until the first day of shooting to ask, "Mr. Ford, I've lost lots of native parts - Indians, Arabs - because of my blue eyes. How come you cast me?" Ford replied, "Brandon, hasn't it occurred to you that the exception, dramatically speaking, is always more exciting than the rule?" Brandon told McBride that he used that line many times whenever the issue of his blue eyes came up, and he "always got parts by quoting Mr. Ford."

reply

Actually, your assumption was quite correct. Comanches and Apaches do NOT have blue eyes.

reply

Untrue.

Perfectly okay & thanks. We're all a little ignorant about things we don't often encounter. I was ignorant of this too until I did a little research on the subject some time ago.

Interesting.
