Spitting

Why did one spit at the log just before the fight at the wedding?

I don't know for sure but I got the impression while watching the movie that it was the equivalent of a slap as was done in the dueling days. It gave the two men a legitimate reason to fight.

Fighting over a woman didn't make much sense. Whatever the outcome, she would decide which guy she wanted. Fighting over honor, I suppose, was acceptable; more 'dignified' because, really, the fight was a way to express their frustration with the situation they were in.

Charlie was upset to Marty had returned and to find Laurie in his arms; Marty was upset that Charlie suggested he had had his share of squaws. They hadn't liked each other much to start.
