THIS is one of the reasons the film is so great
The visual beauty of the film is contrasted starkly by the dark subject matter of the plot.
The viewer is astounded by the gorgeous cinematography while simultaneously being unsettled by the dreadful things that happen amidst such beauty. When I see this film, I am basically moved profoundly in opposite directions by the two elements working in concert.
It's a powerful contrast that works extremely well in this situation. This juxtaposition is another one of the reasons the film is so great.
