Any other Robert Heinlein fans?
I was thinking about the movie's themes and specifically the character of Professor Quatermass and it seems like very likely Nigel Kneale was influenced by Heinlein's novel "The Man Who Sold the Moon" which came out in 1951. There are a lot of similarities between Quatermass and Harriman, in the ways they are so emotionless and dedicated to the idea of reaching the moon. In Harriman's case this is a personal desire to actually be on the moon. At the end of both stories, the character re-iterates his desire to build another rocket and try again. Quatermass always kind of reminded me of a "Heinlein hero" in general, but the connection between these two stories in particular seems distinct to me. That's not to disrespect Kneale, he's a genius and he obviously used the idea in a very different way.
Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'
