Why is Quatermass an American in this movie?

In Quatermass and the Pit he is a Brit of some sort.

That seems more appropriate.

Why is he a Yank in this film?

Was he a Yank in the original TV serial?

He was originally conceived as a Brit, and is one in the film.

The Studio needed to cast a known American actor for its U.S. distribution and promotion. Brian Donlevy was still well-known to many fans then.
