No Oscar?

I find it very curious that the film was not even nominated for awards in any number of categories...

Very underrated film. Huston beautifully captured the tone and spirit of Melville’s book in his adaptation. The cast and casting of the movie is meticulous. Welles shines in a cameo performance and Peck works fine for me as Ahab. Richard Baseheart (Best Supporting Actor—National Board of Review) and Leo Genn are standouts. The production values, especially Oswald Morris’ camerawork and Philip Sainton’s score are superb. My favorite Huston film and I think his masterpiece among many fine movies.
Although the film was virtually ignored for Oscar consideration except for Oswald Morris’ nomination, the film and its elements are not without its admirers. In addition to Baseheart, Huston also took the top honor that year from the National Board of Review as well as The New York Film Critics Circle for his direction Two honors more prestigious, I think, than the more visible and commercial Oscar.
