??? Anne Bancroft ???

Hey folks,

Did anyone else have difficulty regognizing Anne Bancroft in the part of Corinna Marston? She would have been about 23 or 24 when this film was made, put her in a blonde wig, and it was very difficult for me to recognize her. I kept looking at Corinna Marston and trying to see the Anne Bancroft of later years. Every now and then, I thought I might see a flash of Bancroft in her face, but then it was gone again just as quickly. I can only guess the blonde hair threw me off in my recognition.

Best wishes,

I had no idea it was Anne Bancroft. The blonde hair really threw me. She was an absolutely stunning woman.

Just watched it. I knew she was in the film, so I was looking for her. Hard to recognize when you're looking at her straight ahead, but I thought it looked enough like her in profile shots. Again, I knew it was her in an early role, though, so I was already on the lookout.

Her name is big in the opening credits, and I saw it, and then instantly forgot, because I never connected the character and Bancroft. But now remembering it, I can see it in her face, mostly the somewhat widely-spaced eyes. The voice is also so different.

My favorite early Anne Bancroft sighting is Don't Bother to Knock. I've seen it quite a few times because it's my favorite Marilyn Monroe movie. Anne Bancroft is a lounge singer at a hotel bar. It is one crazy hotel! Elisha Cook Jr is an elevator operator. Richard Widmark is Anne Bancroft's boyfriend. And Jim Backus is a hotel guest who needs a psychotic babysitter. Fortunately the agency is able to oblige and Marilyn Monroe shows up right on time to show that annoying little girl who's boss!

(Note: This description of Don't Bother to Knock is not entirely accurate.)

P.S. I love The Last Frontier! Victor Mature is one of my favorite hammy actors and I was a little disappointed (at first!) that he's actually pretty good in this. But I warmed to the film very quickly. Great cast! Robert Preston is especially very impressive.

Janet! Donkeys!
