I came on at the end of the movie so maybe I missed it. My question is why didn't they put the wives under police protection even if it was surveillance from afar? Or have policewomen stand in for the wives at home.

The police are watching for suspicious people and when a strange woman walks by and disappears right in front of them they do nothing!! (lol)

The cop's wife who is under threat comes walking down the same street and the cop on watch doesn't even recognized her. He's on watch and from where he is he can't SEE people's faces!! (lol)

The strange woman is the killer with his pants rolled up under a raincoat. He has suddenly reappeared and is following the cop's wife down the street. His pants leg falls and when he drops to roll it up the police watching him do nothing. They have plenty of chances to shoot him since he's carrying a bag. Before he could putt a gun out he'd be dead. Geez! (lol)

I know....all of the variables that you mention are so true and obvious.

You missed earlier in the film all of the complaints and nagging that
Lila, the detective's wife, had about him leaving law enforcement
because she did not want to become a police widow.

I think after being berrated by another detective's wife,
(about how she was being selfish and only thinking of herself);
decided to put herself in harms way, and be the bait by which
they would be able to catch this nut.

Her friend tells her that the escaped convict was coming after her...
not her husband as she was led to believe.

Knowing that her husband had gone to such lengths to protect her,
and not himself, gave her to courage to step up and try to help
however dangerous the situation would be.

I thought that Lila would stay put after getting set straight by Gillespie's wife. Everything seemed okay - but then, all of a sudden, there's Lila out on the street trying to get back home, and I'm like, WTF?

One obvious plot hole was that "Grace Flanders", John Larch's wife, had innumerable opportunities to just slip out the back door and run like hell. Instead, she just hovered around, quivering with fear - long before Wendell Corey ever pulled his gun.
