Footage of the real fight

Fight between Primo Carnera -- who is widely regarded as the basis for Toro -- vs Max Baer -- who reprises his feat in the final boxing match of the film.

Absolutely fascinating to see.

Great line from the narrator: "Carnera became a canvas decoration, going down 11 times."

Baer, born in 1909, was 25 at the time of the 1934 match, making him 47 when the movie came out. (I thought he looked way too old!) Sadly, he died 3 years later, at the age of 50, of a heart attack.

Looks like much of the movie was a portrayal of real-life events, including the boxer with the flu who had earlier fought Baer dying after a bout with Carnera.

Wow…you dug that out?! Great. I'll watch it.
I also noticed Baer looked a bit old, especially his face. However, his body did not look like 47. Chomiskey also looked a bit older than the 34 he is supposed to be…and for some reason, in the German dubbed version, they increased his age to 38. Also, Chomiskey looked a bit too light for a heavyweight…was he really 200+?

Youtube has most of the Baer-Carnera fight.

The reason Carnera got knocked down 11 times is because this was before the 'standing-eight count' was a rule.
