Unfortunately the DVD is widescreen, but a non-anamorphic transfer, and not the best quality. I'd give the picture 6.5/10 but the audio only 5.5/10. The audio seems to be just mastered from an optical element, so it has a lot of pops, clicks and hiss. The DVD does include a very funny interview with director John Waters reflecting on how much he loves the film.
I've got a VHS copy I bought in the late 1980s/ early '90s and although the picture is fullscreen thereby ruining the Cinemascope presentation the sound has none of the pops and clicks you mention. The John Waters interview sounds interesting though.

They play the DVD version on FOX MOVIE CHANNEL usually on Jayne's birthday and the anniversary of her death and occasionally there in between. I recorded it onto DVD and it turned out splendid!
