'This ship arranges its own eclipses.'

I'm watching the Deleted Scenes, and I'm really wishing that they'd included that extended scene of the C-57D coming out of hyperdrive, when Doc notices that it's a bit warm in the ship...

FORBIDDEN PLANET Outtakes + Deleted Scenes - pt 1 of 2! - YouTube (Second clip)

Doc: "Warm in here, Skipper."
Adams: "Yeah." [looks in scope] "Jerry, you..."
Bosun: "There's Altair right on the nose, Skipper!"
Adams: "Jerry, you have got to stop cutting them this close!"
Jerry: "This is close?"
Adams: "Yeah, there's the hull temperature alarm! Put us in the shadow of the first planet out from the Primary! Cool us, Quinn!"
Quinn: "Aye, sir."
Bosun: "Cooling stations, on the double!"
Adams: "Some day you're gonna bring us out right inside some star!"
Jerry: "Yeah, and you'll probably court-martial me for it."

That makes a hell of a lot more sense than what we see in the final theatrical cut...

Doc: "Warm in here, Skipper."
Adams: "Yeah." [looks in scope] "Jerry, you..."
Bosun: "There's Altair right on the nose, Skipper!"
[External shot of C-57D flying past as Altair is blacked out]
Doc: "Meanwhile, this ship arranges its own eclipses."

From now on, whenever I watch this film, I'm just gonna blurt, "HOW?! How is the ship doing that?!" when it gets to that scene.

The 'Jerry you' scene was intended to be cleaned up in final edit. But the rough cut played with preview audiences. Not knowing why it worked and afraid to change anything, the studio elected to release the rough cut.

Funny, even when I saw this film as a kid I remember seeing how Nielsen reacted to the view of the sun with and annoyed "Jerry, you..." and thinking "wow, did they come out too close to the sun or something?" But then they just dropped it. It's a strange moment in the film, and that deleted scene would have filled it perfectly.

I may have been on my second beer, but last time TCM ran this, seemed "Jerry you" had been removed. I was astonished, as TCM never cuts ANYthing.

Actually I'm glad they left it out. The dialogue was a little out of character for Adams and cast some doubts as to the skill and training of Farman as astrogator very early in the film.

IOW, too soon to show any flaws in the main characters' professionalism.
