Just saw the Blu-ray version

And all I can can say is wow, the hi-def makes it look like this movie could have been shot today. This movie may not be better effects-wise than movies being made today, but it has a way better story...I think after many years and many viewings, I finally understand where the monster REALLY came from.

Intrigued I am. From where?

"Morbius, something is approaching from the southwest. It is now quite close."

From the Id. Monsters from the Id.

reply

No, from Disney !

It is great to see it now in HD for sure. Brings back memory of seeing it in the huge, dark, elaborate Mastbaum theater in Philly. It was incredible, and lost out on special effects oscar to Ten Commandments. Should have won but hard to trump DeMille I guess.

Hard to trump John Fulton, who did some mighty fine work in the 10 C's.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

The monster was composed of focused energy, similar to the food devices in all of the iterations the "Star Trek" series; except it existed only as long as Morbius' basic instincts materialized it. The Krell were trying to convert energy into matter; hence, the purpose of those 400 square miles of fusion reactors. A similar concept is melodramatically presented in the vastly inferior "Fiend Without a Face" (1958).

Oh.

When did it come out on Blu-ray?

reply

Dunno, but it's on Amazon. Some reviews say the transfer on BR is better than the DVD, some say it's identical and not worth the purchase if you already have the DVD. Hmmmm...

2010, I think

Watched it the other day on BD, it is stunning

reply

Agreed. A truly brilliant film that would not be made today.

Oh gravity thou art a heartless bitch
