In Richard Dennings's "mini-bio" by Tom Weaver, he says that Warner Brothers wouldn't sign him on because he looked too much like a star they already had under contract...do you think that was Robert Young ? I ask, because I just finished watching Day the World Ended, and all through the whole movie he remined me of Robert Young.

The only alternative to Robert Young I can think of is William Lundigan. He was at Warner Brothers in 1941. Although Lundigan was more known for being a voice actor at Warner Brothers, he did get a few leading man in Warners starting from 1941. But I have to admit Denning does look more like Robert Young.
