This is from a book I read when I was about 12

I would have read this around 1954-55. It was a paperback western written by the prominent author, Frank Gruber, and was entitled FORT STARVATION. (Perhaps it was published in hardcover also.) I always remember that book because, at the time, I was young and more easy to please with my reading material (and was a book worm besides) and the story intrigued me because of the mystery and the "unknown" past about his father that Frank Slater, the lead character, was trying to unravel and bring to light. I am not sure there was a woman character in the book like the Donna Reed character in the movie. But, for those who like to read westerns I think this written story might hold up pretty well today.

I just finished reading "Fort Starvation" and it barely resembles the John Sturges western, not that this should come as any surprise. The heroine in the novel is nothing like Donna Reed's character and she doesn't tote around a quirt or fix up Slater. Actually, another woman helps patch up Slater in an episode that resembles a range war. For the record, "Fort Starvation" did come out in hardback. The copy that I have is a wore, library first edition.
