I thought Around the World In Eight Days was the best film of 1956 and fully deserved best picture. Great performances, interesting scenary, a terrific story and an overall fine adaptation of the Verne classic.
Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!
this film is nowhere on my radar for 1956 - which was a bad year for film.
1. the searchers
2. the killing
3. invasion of the body snatchers
4. samurai 3: duel at ganyru island
5. and god created women
"Rampart: Squad 51."
One of the biggest reasons why a lot of people (me included) don't pay any attention to the Oscars, is exactly for that reason. Many of the awards do not stand the test of time. It is sometimes laughable later, to find out that a particularly bad movie/actor/actress got it, for some unknown reason. It just reflects the popularity contest winner at the time...that's all.

Steve
Around the World in Eighty Days is a great movie, but I like The Ten Commandments much more.
