shareApparently Laurence Olivier turned down the role of the butler, Mr. Foster, played in the movie by Sir John Gielgud. I think I also read or heard somewhere that John Wayne turned down the cameo role of the US Cavalry Colonel that was then played by Tim McCoy (after Todd fired Gregory Peck), but I'm not sure about that.
shareThe only one that I've definitely read about was that the role of the western train conductor played by Buster Keaton was first offered to Stan Laurel, who turned it down because he said he wouldn't have felt right appearing without his long-time partner Oliver Hardy, who'd just passed away recently.

Laurel may have turned the role down, but the film came out in 1956, and Hardy died in 1957.Hardy hadn't acted since 1950 and was in ill health.
Suffered a severe stroke on 12 September 1956 that left him paralyzed and unable to speak.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001316/bio
Maybe John Wayne didn't want to compete with himself in The Searchers.
