Passpartout/Cantinf las

The late, great Mexican comic actor Cantinflas(Mario Moreno Reyes) was superb as Passpartout. I like that scene where he rides a pennyfarthing and he checks out a stunning woman pushing a baby carriage.

Yeah, that was one of my favorite scenes with him, I think his character added the charm to the movie. His athleticism is what made his character so flexible.

you are right on the money!! rent "Pepe" He was the star of the movie. A lot of cameos from famous actors

I agree that Cantinflas was great in this movie. He should have been nominated for best actor in a supporting role. Anthony Quinn won it for Lust of Life and he was good in it but Cantinflas was better in this movie. He wouldn't have been qualified for best supporting actor if he is listed as a star in the movie but if he didn't he should have been nominated for best actor. Much to the Academy's discredit by not recognizing this outstanding performance.

I saw this movie yesterday for the first time in over 50 years and was struck by the outstanding performance of Cantinflas. He dominated the entire movie and upstaged his leading players many times.

Question: Was the 'Spanish' bullfight secene (fabulous in it's own right and apparently without the use of a stand-in?) really shot in Spain? I am sure that I could see a Mexican flag hanging from a house in the upper background distance...am I right?...and if so was this a marker saying 'Shot in Mexico' or a tribute to Cantinflas...or both??

Yes, Chinchón, Madrid, Spain. No IMDb info on that location. Also no Mexican locations listed.

One thing that bugs me about Passepartout is him speaking Spanish to the Bombay Indians when he spots a cow eating some flowers. Wouldn't he know that they wouldn't understand Spanish?

reply

Not only that, but the character is supposed to be French, so shouldn't he be speaking French to the Indian shopkeeper? Half of the movie he speaks Spanish, but he always answers "Oui, Monsieur!" when addressing Fogg's command.
