Is it just me or is this movie packed with lots of straight up bizarre moments?

So, I gave this a re-watch for the first time in like 10 years - gotta say that this movie has lots of really odd and weird moments to it (IE - the opening scene where Jim Stark is hammered and laying by the street while fiddling around with the toy and a piece of trash, Plato's first scene in which he is talking about how he kills dogs, Jim's oddball drunk behavior in the police station, THE ENTIRE PLANETERIUM SEQUENCE, etc),

The bizarre moments in this film, were they intended to be as odd as they appear or was that all just a part of the "looks interesting, throw it in" aspect (I know its common for movies to have this sort of thing happen during filming, it historically is the reason for so many iconic lines/scenes in cinema as a whole).

*I also gotta mention/ask about the Planeterium scene - what was the deal there? I mean, I get that Jim was just trying to be goofy when he made the cow sound and I get why Plato hit the deck during the later part of the space show. Even the parts of this scene that fit (such as the space presentation) felt extremely surreal - this sort of thing, was this intentional?

The movie is almost 70 years old. At the time it was considered groundbreaking and really hit a chord with the younger generation of the era. Times and themes have changed, as they always do. Regardless, it's an immersive and entertaining classic.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I also regard it is being a great film with a ton of timeless elements to it all; the bits that I found to be bizarre are all bits that I have zero issue with, they are just surreal and hilarious in a very unique way lol
