Did Dean really injured his hand during the cop intervention scene?

When he was banging on the table, I noticed that he winced in pain when he did that. Was that in the script or was it ad-libbed? Just wondering...

reply

It was very real, he bruised his hand very much and had to wear a badage on it for a week.

It really didn't look like he hit the desk all that hard. Maybe they did multiple takes of it and that's how he hurt his hand. What we see in the actual film itself really doesn't look like he hit it that hard.

reply

Oh he did, check out any biography on James Dean and you'll see.

reply

Oh, I've heard the story that James Dean hurt his hand hitting the desk before, what I'm wondering is how much of that is producer's hype. You know, the whole "Hey, look how talented and dedicated our lead actor is to the role, hell, he even hurt his hand punching a desk in the movie!"

reply

He also got cut during the knife fight scene and blew up at the director when he stopped filming.

reply

Well, it was kind of stupid to do that scene with real knives when fake ones would've worked just the same. Supposedly, the actors had a chain-mail like armor on underneath their clothes, but if he did get stabbed, I guess it must've been somewhere the armor didn't cover, obviously.

reply

It could have been faked, but then again so could have Dean jumping out of the car during the chicken run, but he said no, audiences were getting too smart so it had to look realistic.

reply

The chickie run jump was fake. You can prove it to yourself too, if you don't believe me. Take your copy of "Rebel", use the slow motion feature when he supposedly jumps out of the car and you'll see that he just rolls and doesn't actually jump from the car.

reply

The chickie run jump was filmed indoors! anyone whose been to warner bros will tell you that.
