This is the third time I watch this movie, and I've noticed a scene I just don't understand.

It's just BEFORE Jim goes to the chicky race (minute 44 or 45); his father walks down the stairs and I hear the mother's voice saying something like she's just ordered the house, and the Dad answers that there was blood on Jim's clothes, and then the mum: "What; and you didn't stop him?" Weren't Jim and his dad alone in the house? Was the mother in the house too? Because when this dialogue takes place, I can see no trace of the mother. (Or was it the gradmother talking??) Maybe it's a dumb question, but this scene is quite weird. Or maybe my dvd has a problem, who knows.

It's been a long time since I've seen it but I thought the mother and grandmother were both upstairs sleeping when Jim was talking with the father. They were whispering to one another so they wouldn't wake them up.

Wasn't the mum in bed, poorly? Wasn't this the scene where the dad was bringing her food in bed and he had dropped the tray and Jim was getting annoyed at his dad for running around after her.
